Geospatial FAQ

Common questions about geospatial data handling in OSDU.

I have projected coordinates in a non-WGS84-based CRS, as well as WGS84 geographical coordinates for the same data. Should I ingest the WGS84 coordinates into OSDU?

You should ingest the original coordinates and in your case the projected coordinates in a non-WGS84-based. Your WGS84 coordinates were obtained through coordinate transformations for the purpose of displaying all your data together on the same map.

You will achieve the WGS 84 coordinates in OSDU (Search, GCZ) by ingesting the original coordinates with the proper CRS assigned. OSDU will handle your coordinates appropriately during ingestion ensuring the proper audit trail.

OSDU technically allows three ways to ingest coordinates — why does Equinor require only AsIngestedCoordinates?

OSDU Search Service Documentation outlines how to handle coordinate conversion for AsIngestedCoordinates and WGS84Coordinates – the coordinates can be technically allowed to be ingested in the following ways:

  1. Only "WGS84Coordinates" block
  2. Only "AsIngestedCoordinates" block
  3. Both "AsIngestedCoordinates" and "WGS84Coordinates" block

Why for ingestion into Equinor OSDU, it is required by Equinor GI to use only "AsIngestedCoordinates" (option 2)?

This approach ensures maintaining the accuracy of the original data. It ensures the audit trail in OSDU. It minimizes conflicting positions across OSDU Storage, Search, and GCZ.

In case of any doubts or comments regarding this approach, please feel free to reach out for clarification or further discussion. Please note that other OSDU geomatics peers share the same views on this.

WGS 84 geographical coordinates have been ingested as WGS84Coordinates. However, I have received information that they should be ingested differently.

As you have only WGS 84 coordinates (WGS 84 geographical coordinates), they should be populated into the "AsIngestedCoordinates" block with the appropriate CRS tagging. This approach ensures that proper audit trail will be maintained.

CRS tag for WGS 84 geographical coordinates:

"SpatialLocation": {
  "AsIngestedCoordinates": {
    "type": "AnyCrsFeatureCollection",
    "CoordinateReferenceSystemID": "data:reference-data--CoordinateReferenceSystem:Geographic2D:EPSG::4326:",
    "persistableReferenceCrs": "",
    "features": [
      {
        "type": "AnyCrsFeature",
        "geometry": {
          "type": "AnyCrsPolygon",
          "coordinates": [...]
        }
      }
    ]
  }
}

I have found an OSDU guideline for finding Coordinate Transformation to WGS 84 based on the location — is this approach recommended by Equinor GI or should any other internal instructions be followed?

Refers to section 4.5.3.

How can I establish proper audit trail for my data in OSDU, considering that the original coordinates are not available due to prior coordinate transformations?
